PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana — Complete Application Guide for UP Residents
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (formerly PM-KUSUM) is the Indian government's flagship scheme to provide free electricity to 1 crore households through rooftop solar installations. If you live in Uttar Pradesh, here's everything you need to know to apply and get your solar subsidy.
What is PM Surya Ghar Yojana?
Launched in February 2024, this scheme aims to:
- Install rooftop solar panels on 1 crore households
- Provide up to 300 units of free electricity per month
- Offer subsidies of up to ₹78,000 for residential installations
Subsidy Structure
| System Size | Subsidy Amount |
|---|
| Up to 2 kW | ₹30,000 per kW |
|---|---|
| 2 kW to 3 kW | ₹18,000 per kW (for additional capacity) |
| Above 3 kW | No additional subsidy |
Maximum subsidy: ₹78,000 (for a 3 kW or larger system)
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the subsidy in Uttar Pradesh, you must:
1. Be an Indian citizen
2. Have a valid electricity connection with UPPCL (or local DISCOM)
3. Own the property where solar will be installed (or have owner's consent)
4. The roof must have adequate space and structural strength
5. The installation must be done by an MNRE-empanelled vendor
Step-by-Step Application Process
Step 1: Register on the National Portal
Visit pmsuryaghar.gov.in and register with your electricity consumer number and mobile number.
Step 2: Choose Your System Size
Based on your monthly consumption, select the appropriate system size. Our recommendation: if your monthly bill exceeds ₹2,000, a 3 kW system is ideal.
Step 3: Select an Empanelled Vendor
Choose an MNRE-empanelled solar installer. Saurabh Brothers is empanelled and serves all 75 districts of UP.
Step 4: Get Installation Done
The vendor will complete installation, net metering, and commissioning.
Step 5: Upload Commissioning Report
After installation, upload the commissioning certificate on the portal.
Step 6: Receive Subsidy
The subsidy amount is directly credited to your bank account within 30 days of verification.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Choosing a non-empanelled vendor — you won't receive the subsidy
- Incorrect consumer number during registration
- Not applying for net metering — this is mandatory for subsidy
- Waiting too long — the scheme has limited slots per district
